In the shadow of so much death and destruction in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories (OPT) of the West Bank, I admit I have found it hard to acknowledge the depth of the shock that October 7th visited on Israel and Israelis.

On that dreadful Saturday morning I think I was fully aware from the earliest minutes of the news first breaking that this would not end well for the Palestinian people. The early reports were chaotic, terrifying, brutal, bloody and very, very scary. But some of the rhetoric from Israeli officials was already disquieting.

Of course blunt reactions to something so terrible can illicit abnormally, aggressive and vengeful remarks in the moment, and that is to be expected. I cannot imagine how I would feel under such circumstances; I’m sure that…
