Jacques-Louis David, The Lictors bring Brutus the Bodies of his Sons, 1789. The personification of patriarchy at the heart of revolutionary France. The declaration of the Rights of Men pointedly excluded women. Here David reinforces the idea of the traditional family, following the immense contemporary influence of Rousseau’s novel, Emile, 1762. In the above painting we see Brutus, the stern faced Roman patrician mourning his losses, while the women of the household remain in the background, clutching and caring for the second class offspring, the daughters.
